Science Schema
We began our science unit by creating a schema of what the students already knew about science. I was surprised to find out they had no idea who Albert Einstein was.....not sure why I thought a 6 year old should know about him. So as you can see on our chart what they knew about Science was very little. (What they know is listed on Einsteins hair).
Not having much background with science it was no surprise that they didn't have many questions about it. We actually started with just four. ( Right arm)
In order to introduce them to this new concept of science and build some background knowledge for them I read several books. Books about what a scientist is, where you can study science, tools scientist use....etc. etc. We then charted this new learning into a tree map of what scientist can do, what scientist have and are, and what they use.
The students then used this chart to write about what they had learned about scientist. We extended the lesson into a quicky art project by having the students create their own scientist.
We turned them into a book by placing their writing in the Einsteins shirt. I have to say they looked very cute. I had seen this idea in one of the blogs I visited I just can't remember which one. I'd love to give them credit but as of today I have not been able to find it again. If you know who it is please let me know so I can give the correct credit.

LOVE all those little Einsteins! Scholastic also has a great book called Que son los cientificos/What are scientists? that we loved to read to build schema about scientists. You can find it on Amazon for a penny!
